Beijing: Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a video meeting on Tuesday, according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV. The meeting took place at Beijing's Great Hall of the People.
While CCTV did not immediately disclose details of the discussion, the call underscored the ongoing relationship between China and Russia, with both nations maintaining close political and economic ties.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, China has positioned itself as a neutral party, though it has faced criticism from NATO members who view Beijing as an "enabler" of the conflict due to its partnership with Moscow.
Xi and Putin's personal camaraderie has been a recurring theme in their bilateral relations. Xi has previously referred to Putin as his "best friend," while Putin has praised Xi as a "reliable partner."
In a New Year’s message to Putin last month, Xi emphasized promoting "world peace and development" and highlighted the nations' alignment on non-confrontational policies. According to CCTV, Xi stated that both countries have moved forward "hand-in-hand along the correct path of non-alignment, non-confrontation, and not targeting any third party," despite global challenges and turbulence.
